Cost of living in France — and in Paris: the minimum wage, Paris rents, transport, healthcare and taxes, with verified official figures, and the questions no official source answers. General information, not financial advice.
This guide is general information, not financial advice. It gathers verified official figures on the cost of living in France — salaries, Paris rents, transport, health, taxes — and clearly states when no official source answers a question.
Figures are dated: a 2017 figure is not a 2026 price. There is no official monthly total for Paris, nor a “decent” or “comfortable” salary defined by an authority: this guide shows verified benchmarks, and it is up to you to judge. Always check your case at the source before deciding.
What is the minimum wage in France?
€12.31 gross an hour since 1 June 2026, or €1,867.02 gross a month for 35 hours — about €1,477.93 net, for information only.
The gross hourly SMIC is €12.31 since 1 June 2026 (service-public.fr, fiche F2300, checked 1 June 2026). For a full-time 35-hour week, that is €1,867.02 gross a month, €22,404.20 gross a year, and about €1,477.93 net a month — the net figure is given for information only.
Beware of old sources: as of 1 January 2026, the SMIC was still €12.02 per hour (€1,823.03 gross per month). It increased by 2.41% on 1 June 2026. A 2026 figure citing €12.02 is the January amount, not the current amount.
Does France still have the 35 hour week?
Yes: the legal working time for a full-time private sector employee is 35 hours per week.
35 hours a week, 151.67 hours a month, 1,607 hours a year (Code du travail, article L3121-27; service-public.fr, fiche F1911, checked 25 September 2025). Collective agreements can set a different weekly duration; hours beyond the legal duration are overtime.
How much does public transport cost in Paris?
€90.80 per month for the Navigo Mois all zones package — and a maximum of €45.40 for an employee, as the employer must reimburse at least 50%.
The Navigo Mois all zones pass costs €90.80 per month since 1 January 2026 (Île-de-France Mobilités, 2026 rates); the annual pass is €998.80.
For an employee, the employer reimburses at least 50% of the fare for home-work trips: the employee therefore pays a maximum of €45.40 per month. The price of a single ticket has not been checked in this guide — it is not published here.
Should you tip servers in Paris?
No: the service is already included in the displayed price - tipping is always optional, and no profession can require it.
Service is a percentage that must be included in the bill; the prices shown are the prices actually payable (DGCCRF, fiche « Le pourboire », July 2021). Tipping remains traditional in some professions, but it is always left to the customer’s discretion. There is no fixed percentage: the 5–10% cited in blogs is usage, not a rule.
How much does it cost to rent a one bedroom apartment in Paris?
There is no official monthly price for a one-bedroom apartment. The OLAP observatory gives €26.30/m² per month on average in Paris — or about €1,307 for 50 m².
According to the Observatoire des loyers de l’agglomération parisienne (OLAP, via Apur, note no. 288, April 2026), the average rent excluding charges in the Paris private rental stock was €26.30/m² on 1 January 2025 — €1,307 a month for 50 m². For new tenants, the average is €28.30/m².
Example ceiling: an unfurnished 2-room 40 m² apartment built before 1946 in Necker (15th) cannot exceed €33.60/m², or €1,344 per month (leases from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026). The cap was to end on 23 November 2026; the Senate voted a 2-year extension on 21 October 2026, not yet adopted — check before signing.
How much does life cost in France for a couple per month?
No official total exists for a couple, or for Paris. The national Insee survey gives an average of €27,408 a year for all households in 2017 — about €2,284 a month.
This figure comes from Insee’s Budget de famille 2017 survey (published September 2020): €27,408 of annual spending on average for all households, or about €2,284 a month. These are 2017 euros — prices have risen since — and a national average, not a Paris budget.
Average consumption breakdown in 2017: housing 16.3%, transport 16.4%, food (excluding alcohol) 16.1%. The totals by couple type sometimes mentioned (€2,563 without children, €3,204 with children) were not read in the Insee text: they are not published here.
How much does health insurance / a mutuelle cost in France?
A consultation with your médecin traitant (GP) costs €30: Assurance Maladie reimburses €19, and €9 remains at your expense — unless a mutuelle covers it. There is no official monthly price for a mutuelle.
Consultation with a sector 1 GP (médecin traitant): base €30. Assurance Maladie reimburses 70%, i.e. €21, minus the €2 participation forfaitaire — so €19 is reimbursed. The €9 ticket modérateur (30%) remains at your expense, unless your complémentaire santé (mutuelle) reimburses it, in part or in full (ameli.fr, 30 September 2026).
No official monthly price exists for a mutuelle: premiums are set by insurers. Blog ranges (€30–150 a month for one person) are not verified and are not published here.
Can you live in Paris on the French minimum wage (SMIC)?
The calculation is tight: the net minimum wage is around €1,478 per month, and the average Paris rent already reaches around €1,307 for 50 m² — around €170 remains before food and transport.
SMIC net indicatif: €1,477.93 a month (since 1 June 2026). Average Paris rent: €26.30/m², or €1,307 for 50 m² (OLAP, 1 January 2025). The difference is about €170 — before food, the Navigo (€90.80, €45.40 maximum for an employee) and everything else.
This is not a verdict: the rent of €1,307 is an average for 50 m², not the price of a studio or a one-bedroom flat, and the SMIC net is indicative. The question is really about small flats, flatshares or the suburbs — not about the average flat.
What is a decent salary to live in Paris?
No official source defines a decent or comfortable salary — neither for Paris nor for France. This guide only provides the verified benchmarks below, and it's up to you to judge.
Verified benchmarks: SMIC net indicatif €1,477.93 a month (since 1 June 2026); median net salary €2,190 a month and average net salary €2,733 a month (Insee, private sector, 2024); average Paris rent €26.30/m², or €1,307 for 50 m² (OLAP, 1 January 2025); Navigo Mois €90.80, €45.40 maximum for an employee.
The same lack of official threshold applies to the whole of France and for a comfortable salary: no text from Insee, service-public.fr or DGFiP sets such an amount. Beware of any figure presented as the salary you need to live in Paris.
What is the average salary in France?
In 2024, a private sector employee earns an average of €2,733 net per month — and half of employees earn less than €2,190 net per month.
Insee (Insee Première no. 2079, 23 October 2025), full-time equivalent, private sector, 2024: average net salary €2,733 a month (€3,602 gross); median net salary €2,190 a month. “Net” here means after social contributions, before income tax.
€3,000 net a month is above the average (€2,733) and well above the median (€2,190); €2,000 net is above the SMIC net (€1,477.93) but below the median. Neither “good” nor “sufficient” has an official definition — it depends on the city, the rent, the household, and whether the amount is net or gross.
What are the income tax brackets in 2026?
Scale 2026 (2025 income, per share): 0% up to €11,600, 11% up to €29,579, 30% up to €84,577, 41% up to €181,917, 45% beyond.

How much does life cost in Paris per month?
No official source gives a monthly total for Paris — or for groceries. This guide therefore publishes no total: only the verified components (rent, transport, health, salaries).
Insee does not publish a monthly Paris budget: its Budget de famille survey is national and its latest edition dates from 2017 (the new edition is being collected through 2026, results not published). There is also no official Paris grocery bill.
The verified components are in this guide: Paris rent €26.30/m² on average (OLAP), Navigo Mois €90.80, consultation €30 (€19 reimbursed), SMIC net €1,477.93. Blog totals are not verified and are not published here. For the same reason, no official comparison “Paris vs other European cities” exists: Eurostat compares countries, not cities.
What is the average price of a property in Paris?
The figure of €9,550/m² is often cited, but the Notaires du Grand Paris communiqué was not read at source in this guide: it is therefore not published here as a verified figure.
What is reported: the Notaires du Grand Paris communiqué of 1 October 2026 is said to give €9,550/m² for older apartments in Paris at the end of July 2026. That text was not read on notaires.fr in this guide — check it yourself on notaires.fr (press releases) and in the INSEE–Notaires index before relying on it.
Also note that the question says house: Parisian sales are almost all apartments, and notaries do not publish house prices in Paris - the market is too small.
At what time do the French go to bed?
There is no official bedtime — but Insee’s time-use survey says the French sleep on average 8 hours 30 minutes a day.
Insee’s Emploi du temps 2010 survey: the French slept on average 8 hours 30 minutes a day, 13 minutes less than in 1999. The often-cited time — half of the French in bed by 11 p.m. — was only read in secondary sources and is not published here. The new edition of the survey (launched 13 October 2025) has not yet published its results.
This is not a cost-of-living question: it is a daily-life card, included here because the question is asked alongside the cost-of-living questions.
Where to check cost of living figures before deciding?
Service-public.fr for minimum wage and 35-hour workweek, Insee for salaries and expenses, OLAP and Apur for Paris rents, Île-de-France Mobilités for Navigo, ameli.fr for health
Service-public.fr: SMIC (fiche F2300) and working time (fiche F1911). Insee: private-sector salaries (Insee Première no. 2079) and household spending (Budget de famille 2017). Apur (note no. 288) and OLAP: Paris rents. Île-de-France Mobilités: 2026 tariffs and the Navigo Mois pass. Ameli.fr: ticket modérateur. Impots.gouv.fr: income-tax bands.
If a figure in this guide does not match your situation — different city, different household, different status — check it at the source before deciding. This guide is general information, not financial advice.
