A practical guide to buying a new car in Spain: Auto+ aid of up to €4,500, the DGT registration fee of €99.77, the taxes to get itemised in writing from the dealer, and who registers the car. General information, not legal or tax advice.
This guide is general information, not legal or tax advice. Grants and taxes depend on the car, the autonomous community and your situation — confirm every figure with the dealer, the DGT and the tax office (Agencia Tributaria) before you sign anything.
Is there a MOVES grant in 2026 for buying an electric car?
There is no single nationwide MOVES amount confirmed for 2026. The 2026 programme is Auto+, and applications depend on each autonomous community's call — check the call and IDAE before counting on any grant.
The original MOVES III ended on 31 December 2024 and was amended for 2025. For 2026 no nationwide successor programme with a single amount has been confirmed: the aid is the Auto+ programme (BOE-A-2026-16010), and availability and payment depend on the autonomous community's call. Do not treat any amount in a commercial leaflet as guaranteed.
What is the Auto+ programme and how much does it give for a new electric car?
Auto+ is the 2026 grant programme for new cars (BOE-A-2026-16010): up to €4,500 for an M1 passenger car, calculated on electric, economic and European criteria. The dealer must also apply a €1,000 discount.
The maximum grant is €4,500 for an M1 passenger car, and the exact amount depends on the programme's electric, economic and European criteria. A €1,000 dealer discount is required. The car price must not exceed €45,000. The programme runs until 31 December 2030, but applications depend on the autonomous community's call — check the current call before you buy.
What is the maximum car price to apply for Auto+ aid?
€45,000 for an M1 passenger car. If the car costs more than that, it cannot receive Auto+ aid, even if it meets the other criteria.
The €45,000 cap applies to M1 passenger cars under Auto+ (BOE-A-2026-16010). Ask the dealer to confirm in writing that the price of the model you want is within the cap and that the €1,000 discount is applied, before you sign.
Until when is the Auto+ programme in force?
Until 31 December 2030 (BOE-A-2026-16010). That is the programme's lifetime: each autonomous community's call has its own deadlines, so check the current call in your community.
Auto+ runs until 31 December 2030. Do not confuse the programme's lifetime with the call deadline: grants are applied for inside the open autonomous-community call, and the budgets of each call are not published in this guide. Check the call and IDAE.
How much does it cost to register a new car at the DGT?
The DGT registration fee is €99.77 for a new car (not a moped). It is normally paid by the dealer or their gestoría as part of the price, and it should appear itemised on the invoice.
Registration is the car's first entry in the DGT vehicle register. The €99.77 is the DGT fee for registering a new car; fees are updated yearly, so confirm the current fee in the DGT fee schedule. The permiso de circulación is issued in your name.
What taxes do I pay when buying a new car in Spain?
This guide publishes no tax rates: they depend on the car and the autonomous community. Ask the dealer for the on-the-road price in writing, itemised — car price, IVA, registration tax (IEDMT) if any, DGT fee, IVTM, gestoría, plates and delivery — before you sign.
Do not accept a headline price that hides registration or gestoría. The dealer must itemise every charge on the invoice, and the IEDMT depends on the exact model's CO₂ emissions. If a charge is not itemised, ask about it before you pay.
How much VAT (IVA) is on a new car in Spain?
This guide publishes no IVA rate. A new car bought from a dealer is sold with IVA, not ITP: the IVA must appear itemised on the invoice. Ask the dealer to show you the breakdown before you sign.
ITP is the tax on private used-car transfers; a new car sold by a dealer carries IVA. Do not pay both: check on the invoice whether IVA or ITP applies, and confirm the treatment with the dealer and the Agencia Tributaria.
What is the registration tax (IEDMT) on a new car in Spain?
The IEDMT is a one-off tax paid at first registration. Its amount depends on the exact model's WLTP CO₂ emissions: the dealer or their gestoría settles it (AEAT form 576) and includes it in the price. This guide publishes no bands.
Ask the dealer for the IEDMT band for your exact model and its amount in euros before you sign, because two similar models can fall in different bands. Check that the amount on the invoice matches what you were told.
Can foreigners buy a car in Spain?
Yes, you can buy, but registration and tax treatment depend on your situation (resident or non-resident). The dealer needs your NIE or DNI to register the car in your name — confirm your case with the dealer, the DGT and the Agencia Tributaria before you sign.
Do not assume a resident's conditions apply to a non-resident, or the reverse: IVA exemption or rate and registration can change with your situation. Ask the dealer to confirm in writing which documents you specifically need.
Can I buy a car in Spain without an NIE?
To register the car in your name you need an NIE (or DNI). The dealer needs it for registration, along with your passport and proof of address — get the NIE before you buy.
Without an NIE the registration cannot be completed. If you do not have one yet, apply for it before you sign the purchase, and bring your passport and proof of address (empadronamiento where asked) and your bank details if you are financing the purchase.
Who registers the new car — the dealer or me?
Normally the dealer or their gestoría: that is the usual route for a new car bought in Spain, and you do not normally queue at the DGT yourself. Follow the process until the permiso de circulación arrives in your name.
The dealer files the registration application and pays the fee and taxes. When the permiso de circulación arrives, check at once that the name, address, plate and chassis number are correct, and keep the DGT fee receipt.
Do I have to scrap my old car to get Auto+ aid?
This guide does not confirm that: the maximum €4,500 is calculated on electric, economic and European criteria, and no scrappage requirement is described here. Check the Auto+ call text (BOE-A-2026-16010) and the autonomous-community call before you buy.
Do not hand over your old car or sign a scrappage counting on the grant until the call states in writing whether it is required and on what terms. The dealer must confirm the current call's requirements, not just the maximum amount.
What do I check before signing for a new car?
Grant, itemised price, registration and papers: the four points below, in writing, before you pay anything.
- ✓Auto+ aid: confirm the current call, the amount that applies to you and the dealer's €1,000 discount.
- ✓Price: demand the on-the-road price itemised — IVA, IEDMT, DGT fee of €99.77, IVTM, gestoría, plates and delivery.
- ✓Registration: confirm the dealer or their gestoría registers the car and that the permiso de circulación will be in your name.
- ✓Papers: NIE or DNI, passport, proof of address and, if you finance, the finance approval.
