Living in Paris

Daily life in Paris, in short sourced facts.

Life on foot

5–10 min

Bakeries, pharmacies and markets within a 5–10 minute walk in most arrondissements. Living without a car is realistic.

Navigo pass

€90.80 / month

All zones: metro, RER, bus, tram (2026).

Hospitals

39

AP-HP group, the largest in Europe. Universal coverage (PUMA) after three months of regular residency.

Neighbourhoods

The 10th and 11th are younger and livelier, with cafés and late-night life. The 15th and 17th are calm and upper-middle-class. The 12th, 14th and 20th feel more residential.

Safety

Broadly safe for a big capital, but pickpockets are very active in tourist areas (Opéra, Champs-Élysées, museums, RER B toward the airport). Some north-eastern neighbourhoods need vigilance after dark.
